History and Foundation

Dharma Productions was established in 1976 by Yash Johar with a vision to create entertaining, family-oriented Hindi films. The company gained early success with films like Dostana (1980) and Duniya (1984), building a loyal audience over the decades.

Karan Johar Takes the Helm

After Yash Johar's passing in 2004, his son Karan Johar took over as the creative director of Dharma Productions. Under his leadership, the company entered a new golden era, producing massive commercial and critical successes such as Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham, Kal Ho Naa Ho, My Name Is Khan, and Student of the Year.

Expansion into OTT and Digital Content

Dharma Productions has diversified its portfolio in recent years, venturing into digital content production for platforms like Netflix and Amazon Prime Video. The company launched Dharmatic Entertainment as its digital arm, producing acclaimed web series and short films.

Box Office Milestones

The production house has delivered numerous 100 crore and 200 crore club films. Brahmastra: Part One – Shiva (2022) became one of their highest-grossing films, earning over 400 crore globally. Their consistent track record of producing high-quality, commercially viable films has made them a benchmark in Indian cinema.

Talent Development

Dharma Productions is also known for launching new talent through its Student of the Year franchise and various other projects, helping to shape the careers of several leading Bollywood stars including Alia Bhatt, Varun Dhawan, and Sidharth Malhotra.
